The Future of Food – Can we fix the food system?

Lismore Regional Gallery NSW Lismore

Thursday September 12th
Community and food
Join our panel of food practitioners and experts to discuss some of the challenges and opportunities to create a more just food system.

About this Event

We produce enough food to feed the world, but people are still hungry, the hungriest people are directly involved in food production, and the richest people spend the smallest percentage of their income on food.

Taking into account the plight of farmers in drought, the rising rates of food insecurity, the large volume of food waste, the health care and environmental costs of cheap food and inequities in the labour system in low wages from farm to plate, the food system may appear broken. On the other hand the food system is working for some, industrialised food has delivered the cheapest food possible, bad food may be good for business, but at what cost?

The news isn’t all bad and the movement for change is growing.

A food systems approach brings together the complex web of activities that bring our food from dirt to dinner. The recognised links between the environment, health, food security, poverty and social justice reflect a growing understanding of the structural forces that negatively impact people and the earth.

Join our panel of food practitioners and experts to discuss some of the challenges and opportunities to create a more just food system.

Cafe opens at 5.30pm, panel beings at 6pm.

Presented by the Lismore Regional Gallery and Southern Cross University, Thursday Night Live! is a new ongoing talks program which puts thought-provoking and big ideas in the spotlight.

  • Auslan Interpreted event on request.
  • These are wheelchair accessible events.
  • This is a free event, ticketed for seating purposes only.

Author encounter: Rebekah Robertson – About a girl

Geelong Library & Heritage Centre VIC Geelong

Thursday September 12th
Arts and crafts

In 2000, Rebekah Robertson gave birth to twin boys, George and Harry. But as they grew older, their preferences began to show, and by the age of three it was clear Georgie was drawn to anything that was pretty or had a skirt that could swirl. Rebekah and her husband united in their determination to help her live freely and fearlessly. Their case was the start of the long road to justice for transgender children in Australia and became the basis of the 2013 landmark decision to remove the Family Court’s jurisdiction. This is Rebekah Robertson’s extraordinary personal story of raising her transgender child, Georgie Stone, who has become a voice not just for other transgender kids – but for an emerging generation.

Join us for this special Word for Word National Non-Fiction Festival Preview Week event presenting non-fiction author encounters to whet your appetite ahead of Word for Word festival in November.
