Why play Bridge?

Bridge will never bore you. It is one of the world’s most challenging mental sports. It can be a lifetime pursuit as it takes only a rudimentary knowledge to begin playing and enjoying bridge. Learning to play well takes time and effort as the game is impossible to master – which is why bridge is so popular, since no matter how many years you play, you will always find new challenges. The learning process never ends. It is also a great way to meet people.

Bridge is a game of skill, communication, co-operation, and problem solving. It is part science, part mathematics, part logic, part psychology, and part reasoning. It is an easy game to learn, a hard game to master and you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy it.

The medical profession is now coming to realize that, as people are tending to live longer, remaining mentally fit may be as important as being of physically fit. More and more often, chess, bridge, backgammon and crossword puzzles are cited as excellent activities for keeping the brain exercised and stalling the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias.

Bridge is one of the few games played today by people of all ages and nationalities.

Winston Churchill, Dwight Eisenhower, Mahatma Gandhi, Deng Xiao Ping and Agatha Christie were well-known bridge devotees. Modern-day players include Oprah Winfrey, Woody Allen, Omar Sharif, Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Martina Navratilova and members of the band Radiohead.

About Ian Mansell

Ian Mansell is the owner of the Melbourne Bridge Club. He is a registered teacher, and has taught Bridge for over 12 years. He is passionate about the game and has introduced bridge to over 1,000 people. His mission in life is to promote the game and to help players gain new skills and enjoy their bridge experience.
