The Australian outback is perhaps one of the best places to explore the galaxy of stars in the night sky. The low humidity and minimal light pollution in the red centre allow you to view the stars and planets like you’ve never seen them before.

Learn more about the stars, planets, galaxy, Big Bang theory and cosmos with Ayers Rock Resort’s Astronomer in Residence Program, brought to you in partnership with ASTRO 3D.

The Whaling question: by Wally Franklin

Wally Franklin of the Oceania Project will be speaking about the history of whaling in our area at a time when the whales are undertaking their southern migration past Byron Bay. The talk looks at early interactions between Cetacea (whales and dolphins) and humans, the commencement and impact of commercial whaling on whales in all major oceans, the establishment of International Whaling Commission and environmental responses to commercial whaling and finally where things stand with Civil Society

Grant-seeker workshop for the community

The Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) will be holding a free grant-seeker workshop in Bourke, so that community groups in the shire are more confident in applying for FRRR’s Tackling Tough Times Together (TTTT) grant program.

Targeted to drought-affected communities, FRRR’s TTTT program helps communities access the resources they need to support one another through the ongoing effects of the drought. The grants support community-based activities that both help to relieve current stressors and symptoms, and importantly, build capacity and resilience for the future. FRRR’s grant seeker workshop will take place at the Bourke Council Chambers.

In recognition of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War, Local Studies Officer Simone Taylor will present a talk on the experiences of two local women’s organisations that supported the Dubbo community and the war effort, Dubbo Merrymakers and Dubbo Voluntary Aid Detachment. The presentation is based on research undertaken by the State Library of NSW, and will highlight a fascinating collection of images held in the Local Studies Pictures Collection.

A small display of images will also be installed in the foyer of Dubbo Library prior to the event. This event is part of History Week 2019.
