Board Game Challenge

Based on an aspect of Learning through our ACE group and Social and Emotional Wellbeing programs, adult learners of Utopia community NT, will compete for kangaroo tails in a series of board games challenges. Our SEWB/ACE weekly Women’s Group (Thursdays) and Elder’s Group (Fridays) have been using board games as a means to develop, improve and utilise LLND skills in a fun and engaging way.

The feature game in our challenge will be Ticket to Ride, both the American and the European versions. Ticket to Ride is a cross-country train adventure in which players collect and play matching train cards to build railway routes connecting cities throughout North America and Europe. Utilising theASCF skills of reading, writing, numeracy and learning skills, adult learners must use strategic planning skills to translate written material (cards) into trainlines. Scoring involves the written recording of a tiered system of calculating individual point to point train lengths, as well as destination scores and longest overall train. Map reading is integral to this game and it increases students’ geographical and general knowledge.

There will also be a Darts competition and Yahtzee challenge, both focusing on numerical skills using a range of calculation resources (tables, calculators, number lines, mental computation).
