Visible Mending Workshop – inspired by Shashiko

September 4, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 12:30 pm AEST

Free

Visible Mending is the art of turning rips and tears in your favourite piece of clothing into a beautiful piece of wearable art and there are no machines required! This is hand craft focus. This movement is inspired by the Japanese form of repair known as Shashiko and translated directly means little stabs. Usually it uses white cotton thread on indigo or denim fabric, but creativity knows no bounds! This workshop is suitable for beginners, master sewers, or those who just want to learn something new!

Rescue your textiles from ending up in the rag pile or worse, landfill! The Australian Fashion Council says that on average, each Australian buys 56 new items of clothing each year (equivalent to 15kg worth of textiles). It also indicated that on average 10kg of those textiles will end up in landfill! Visible Mending is a brilliant skill to learn to up cycle your fashion pieces or your favourite around the house or work clothes to keep them out of landfill!

Requirements: You can bring your favourite piece of ripped or torn denim clothing to give it a new lease on life! BUT if you don’t have anything, materials, thread and special needles will be available to attendees.
Limitations: Participants spaces are limited so all participants get the most out of their experience at the workshop.
