Zemach Oman Boro – New South Wales

Zemach, 47, has lived in Australia for 14 years after leaving Ethiopia due to civil war and genocide. In Ethiopia, Zemach was a primary school teacher with a strong passion for educating and supporting young people to reach their potential. Since arriving in Australia as a refugee, he has continued his own learning journey, studying English at TAFE before working in construction and factory roles.

Wanting to develop new skills and create opportunities for a new career, Zemach was referred to ACE Community Colleges to study Individual Support. Following a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment, he undertook a Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways to strengthen his English reading, writing and communication skills. Zemach made significant progress during the course and gained the confidence to move into a Certificate III in Individual Support, where he is enjoying his studies and the opportunity to support people in the community.

For Zemach, adult education has provided new skills, knowledge, confidence and connections with others while opening pathways to future employment. Looking ahead, Zemach hopes to complete his Individual Support qualification, continue into further study and eventually pursue a career in the health sector where he can make a positive difference in people’s lives.
