Alec Vearncombe-Harper – Queensland

Alec began his studies at STEPS Boarding College in January 2024. While Alec is close to his family, he had found life at home increasingly difficult and realised he needed a significant change. He chose STEPS Boarding College to pursue independence, develop new skills, and create better opportunities for himself.

Since arriving at the college, Alec has consistently impressed staff with his achievements and determination to embrace new learning opportunities. Within STEPS Pathways’ learning environment, Alec stands out as an exemplary adult learner, having become both a leader and a mentor to new students. He even initiated a leadership program.

Alec believes he has gained invaluable knowledge through his time in the learning environment, including how to set goals and plan for his future. Alec has discovered a passion for cooking, grown more confident, formed many friendships, and learned to manage his emotions. He is particularly proud of his experience working in the STEPS Café, an activity he greatly enjoys.

Alec’s growth into a young adult with a positive outlook is evident. He encourages others to make the most of opportunities, constantly seeks new learning experiences, and happily shares his journey to inspire others.

Looking ahead, Alec has several pathways he wishes to explore. His immediate goal is to work in hospitality and continue developing his skills. Another important ambition is to finish writing the novel he began in 2021. While his studies at boarding college required his full attention, Alec now feels confident and optimistic about enrolling in a writing course, purchasing a laptop, and dedicating himself to completing his novel.
