Ready to give back

Ready to give back

Maya’s workplace, Waminda, enrolled her into a foundation skills course with Kiama Community College at the start of 2021. At the beginning, she struggled to get through some of the course content – she was overwhelmed, anxious and lacked confidence. After she disclosed to her trainer that she has struggled with dyslexia and some mental health issues, they worked on solutions to help alleviate her barriers. What a difference these interventions made!

After completing the foundation skill program, she went on to complete a Certificate II in Workplace Skills, a Statement of Attainment in First Aid and CPR and a Certificate III in Business with Kiama Community College.

During her Certificate II in Workplace Skills, Maya established a reputation as a highly competent class member who consistently displayed leadership skills gaining respect from her peers. She asked insightful questions which contributed to good ideas in class discussions. Maya was supportive to the other students in the class which in turn encouraged them to maintain their excellent attendance.

Her wellbeing and confidence flourished. Maya said she was always such a shy girl and now after completing her training through Kiama Community College, she feels she has the confidence to talk to anyone. Throughout her traineeship at Waminda, Maya proactively sought opportunities to further her career.

We are moved by how much Maya has changed both in her commitment to her course work as well as in her personality and behaviour.

She recently took the plunge and enrolled in aa Bachelor of Health Science (Mental Health) – something she is extremely passionate about.

Maya was an outstanding student, always punctual and polite, and performed every task asked of her on time and to a very high standard. During Zoom sessions, Maya would log onto her online lessons 20mins before class started, displaying how dedicated she was to her studies.

Maya’s attitude and dedication was displayed throughout all courses she completed with Kiama Community College.

Maya’s goal is to finish her degree and return to Waminda to be their Mental Health Nurse and to provide community with healing and guidance along their journey.
